We caught up with Emily Ackland from the Womens Hockey team to find out what they have planned for this year and their 2017/2018 season.
The University of Reading’s Womens Hockey team achieved a lot during the previous academic year winning a large number of matches and hold one of the biggest social days on campus – the Hockey Social Sixes. Our newly appointed Sports Print Editor, Manon Jones, was keen to learn more and get the scoop on what the team has on offer for new students this season.
MJ: Hi Emily, we are very keen to see what you have in store for freshers this year, particularly now that we have the Women’s Hockey 2018 tournement to look forward to next year. What sort of things can students expect from the ladies team this season?
EA: We have an exciting new weekend away during October this season and pleased to announce that we have expanded our teams to include a brand new 4th team for the year. This would now grow our squad to four teams included a Saturday league team. That way everyone can take part in what they want to do. We will also be having lots of fun and different types of socials which will get everyone involved.
MJ: Wow! That sounds like a lot of fun events to look forward to.What will the team be doing during and after Freshers’ Week?
EA: The hockey team will of course be at the Sports and Dance Fair on the 21st of September so be sure to keep an eye out for our stand if you are keen to learn more about what we do. We will also be having our taster sessions on the 19th and 21st September from 11 am till 12pm on the astro turf near Sports Park. As well as our taster sessions we are holding Fresher’s Trials on the 22nd September from 1pm till 2pm so if you are interested in coming along to try out please bring with you a hockey stick, shinpads and a gum shield to the University hockey astro pitch. We are currently holding our preseason training if you want to give it a go before fresher’s week.
MJ:Plenty of opportunities for everyone to come and give hockey a go then before classes kick off. Why should students consider joining your society?
EA: We have some amazing socials lined up for this year and we are a fun and sociable group of girls. You do not have to have any previous hockey experience as we have range of standards of hockey (1st are playing in Premiership this year) as well as lots of fun opportunities throughout the year. We also team up with the mens hockey team for socials and friendly games.
MJ: It sounds like you will have your hands full with all these amazing opportunities for the team this year. I cannot wait to see what you all get up to and wish you the best of luck for this year.
