Prepare to be shaken (not stirred) by the uni’s own cocktail bar
By Charlie Lowther
Fancy a cocktail (or 2) but don’t wish to spend all your student loan in one night? Then we’re all in luck as the University’s very own established cocktail bar ‘Ice House’ has reopened after an extensive refurbishing over the summer. Offering a menu to suit every taste and budget, it’s not one to miss, especially if you’re the type who likes to raise their Instagram game but not their budget.
Situated just below Wessex Halls and only a 10 minute walk from the centre of the Whiteknights Campus, it’s a hidden gem by the lake, perfect for drinks with friends or date night.
Cocktails (such as the classic pornstar and espresso martinis and mojitos) are included in a 2 for £9.50 deal, one which you will struggle to find anywhere, let alone in the centre of Reading. Also popular are the so- called ‘Cocky T’s’ (slightly cheaper at 2 for £6), with options including their own version of sex on the beach (now Wessex on the beach). If you’d prefer a more sober night, they cater for this too with a new menu of mocktails such as ‘cuddles in the sand’ and the ‘cosno’. Further still, if cocktails aren’t your thing, there’s also Renegade and IPAs on tap, ciders in the fridge and of course, the option of the snakebite so every taste bud is satisfied.
And if these deals aren’t enough to get you across the bridge then maybe the upcoming themed nights will. For those missing their local, the Monday night quiz is proving to be extremely popular. Whether it’s music where your expertise lie or general knowledge is more your thing, the £1 entry (per person in your team) helps to make a fair jackpot for the winners- and if you can’t get your mind going after a day at Uni, there’s also a prize for the best quiz name.
Wishing to cater for a more special occasion? Then their live music nights (which you can keep updated with over on their Instagram page @icehousereading) are the place to head to. If it’s something more hands-on you’re looking for, their upcoming plans of cocktail masterclasses will provide a great alternative, whether you’re looking to celebrate or just fancy having a break from Uni work with your pals.
Ice House is also currently open in the day for teas, coffees and sandwiches. You can find it by typing ‘Ice House’ into google maps or by using the postcode RG6 6BQ. Follow their Instagram for news on upcoming events and competitions @icehousereading.
