Spark Goes Bananas For Las Iguanas

Rating:

Bringing a tasty blend of the traditional and the new to the city, with fresh ingredients, mouth-watering regional food and drink, and service from passionate people. Las Iguanas adds intoxicating Latin rhythms and the rich colour palette of the southern hemisphere to the mix and their diners seemed to enjoy every Latin minute and every Latin mouthful. With Reading severing as the chain’s 23rd site, the Spark Team were given an insight into their newly refurbished home ready for the party season.

Las Iguanas Reading now brings you all the Latin American vibes right to your table and stomachs. Diners are now immersed in a tropical-inspired atmosphere with a cool blue and sun-soaked oranges transporting you to a relaxed sunlit beach rooftop right on your doorstep. There have even been some winter touches ready for to get you into the Christmas spirit. The brand new decor opens up the once cluttered dining area and bringing the bar to centre stage so you and your friends can get front row seats for the all-important drink making action.

Upon our arrival, we were warmly greeted by our enthusiastic host Katrina and attentive waitress Anita who made sure we have well looked after. The team were given the opportunity to learn how to create the Las Iguanas classic Cachaça rum-based cocktail in our own personal masterclass. This simple crafted drink packs a mighty zesty punch perfect for kicking off your night with some great flavours.

As part of the night, we were lucky enough to try some of  the savoury dishes on offer starting with some Empanadas ( two crispy pasties filled with tender lamb braised in mint, tomato & chipotle, with spicy cranberry salsa) and a platter of Quesadillas ( a tortilla, filled, folded, pan-toasted & served with roasted tomato salsa and then stuffed with spicy chicken, peppers, onion & cheese). We gave both dishes a big thumbs up and found ourselves enjoying every mouthful despite making a mess. We felt that the Quesadilla could do with an extra bit of cheesy gooeyness and found a handy way to get the most out of your salsa was by folding your tortilla in half for maximum dunkability.

On to the mains! We delved right into the heart of South America with these next two dishes which had great flavours that danced across our tounges with just the right amount of spice. We tried the bar tender’s recommendation of the Burrito (a wheat tortilla stuffed with chipotle rice, refried beans, crunchy slaw & cheese with salad, soured cream, guacamole & roasted tomato salsa on the side and filled with shredded beef braised in chipotle) which was so tender it melted in your mouth.

However, the crowning glory was the Cuban Sandwich ( filled with roasted pork belly, pulled pork, Emmental cheese & ham with sweet mustard & green pickle relish layered in our buttery toasted bun. With slaw & a choice of fries or salad). We highly recommend it! If you are sad about the lack of fancy fries on campus Las Iguanas have got you covered. With a range of options from sweet potato to the holy curly chip, your potato cravings will be satisfied. The food was just right so if you may need to visit again to try out the dessert menu.

We also got the inside scoop on some awesome deals for you and your mates from the wonderful staff such as keeping an eye out for certain deals on specific days such as their 2 for 1 on cocktails. We loved the Mango Collins and definitely recommend this option if you are planning on taking a large group of friends for a meal out. If you are with Three mobile lookout for their three free burrito deals which can help save you some extra cash.  Not fussed about a big meal then check out the bar snacks menu for a steal on  tasty Tacos from just £2.75 (containing grilled soft pork and floured tortillas topped with your choice of filling, fresh taco slaw and pink pickled onions) these sounded amazing and even had us salivating at the choices of fillings: garlic chilli prawns and guacamole to Havanna club and jerk pork making it a sumptuous mouthful. The staff house menu favourite was the Argentinan Burger which we look forward to trying on our next visit.

Las Iguanas is the perfect place to get you into the party mood with some good vibes, great food and better cocktails and we look forward to our next visit. Be sure to check out their refreshed look and Christmas menu if you’re looking for inspiration for meals out this December.
