WHO owns the Arctic Region? How can we solve the civil war in Syria? And what should be done about the Gaza Strip? We may never have an answer in the near future over these global issues, and world peace may seem like an unreachable goal over the horizon, but here at the Model United Nations Society, we give you the chance to be whichever country you would like to represent.
Every Wednesday from 7-9pm in HumSS G27, we discuss any topic you wish to debate over, in the hope that eventually you can put world leaders like Obama and Kim Jong Un and parties like Hamas and the Israeli Government to shame by coming to an agreement and making this dream of world peace seem achievable.
There are many different ways you can do this, which we will show you over the course of our first meeting aptly called “Diplomat or Dictator?”. We will introduce you properly to Model United Nations, showing you our weird and wonderful world, which will be followed by an admittedly cheesy quiz, though great prizes will be given to those who persevere!
As you will find with MUN, once you have learnt the rules of how to debate, there is no right or wrong way to argue your point. From using the facts of your country you can be the perfect diplomat, a troubled fanatic who refuses to work with anyone, or anything else you can think of!
We also regularly visit other Universities across the UK to debate, such as Bath and UCL. International trips are already planned for each term, with Munich in December, and Prague in February! This is a great chance to meet other students who share the passion of debate from across
the world, making contacts and close friends for life!
If you have any questions or if you are interested in joining up, come visit our stall at Freshers’ Fayre. If you’re feeling particularly eager, then we will be also be set up outside the RUSU building at the beginning of Freshers’ Week, so come over and have a chat.
For now, if you have any questions, you can contact us on our Facebook Page, which is Reading University Model United Nations. Our Society is open to anyone; if you have an interest in debating, international relations, or just want the opportunity to meet some great people, we would love to meet you! See you at Freshers!
