University of Bolton students lose everything in accommodation fire- Here’s how you can help those affected.

Students at the University of Bolton were forced to abandon their belongings when their flats went up in flames on Friday night. An appeal for monetary, clothing and essentials donations is being made to support those affected by the fire.

The Cube accommodation facilities- which are home to around 220 students at the Greater Manchester-based university- caught alight at around 8.30pm on Friday evening.

The fire persisted for nine hours and required 200 firefighters and 40 fire engines to put out the blaze.

Evacuated residents-including both home and international students- had to flee their flats immediately upon acknowledgement of the fire. Fortunately, only two people required medical attention and there is no report of death.

And although The Cube is owned privately by a landlord separate to the institution, the University of Bolton is working tirelessly to provide necessities including toiletries and meals to the residents.

A vigorous process of rehousing to nearby hotels and other student accommodation buildings is also underway and the BBC have reported that more than £10,000 has been crowdfunded for the University of Bolton students.

How can you help?

Whilst making a cash donation might not be an option, there are many other ways you can help get the 220 students affected by the fire back on their feet.

Just like us, these students may have been settling into university, revising for end of term exams, or working on their final year dissertations before the fire. With Christmas coming up, it is also likely that this tragedy will have knock-on effects on their plans for celebrating the festive season.

One student affected by the fire, Meg Dori, has launched a donation appeal calling for people across the UK to donate any clothing, make up and essential items that they can to the sufferers.

Meg- who tweeted “Can’t believe what we’ve gone through tonight…We’ve lost everything” after escaping the fire in her pajamas with just her phone- channelled her courage and fortunate escape from the fire into the launch of a project focused on aiding those affected just hours after the blaze.
