AS THE Editor of The Spark, I’d like to personally take this opportunity to welcome and congratulate all of you for being accepted into your degree of choice at the University of Reading. It’s part of the great university experience to join a society that interests and challenges you so here’s some information for all students who might be interested in join The Spark.
The Spark is the University’s own student-run newspaper, we work day and night to bring stories to students on and off campus. We frequently post articles online and we also publish a paper on a monthly basis. Anyone who has a knack for anything relating to writing, photography, design or drawing is welcome. The Spark has four sections: News, Lifestyle, Entertainment and Sports. Within these there are several other subsections to explore, such as Opinion, Travel, Fashion and Film reviews.
Established in 1934, The Spark has had several name changes as well as design changes. Previously named Spark*, and briefly ‘Splat’, the paper has adapted to the student culture at the University. Before 1934 however, the University paper was named The Shell—radically different than the paper that exists today.
If you’d like to join us, the best way to get in touch is to become a member of The Spark online here.
There, you’ll be able to pick and choose which section(s) that you’d like to be a part of. We’ll be able to email you ideas throughout the year about opportunities for each issue. Also, if you have any questions or concerns you can email either myself or the appropriate section editor. If you’re looking for our office, you can find us in the Stephen Lawrence Media Centre located behind the University’s Student Union building.
The Spark is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year and we have a lot of new ideas in store. For example, we have added our new Agony Aunt section named ‘Miss Advised and Mr Magnetic’, as well as a sub-section called ‘WattsUp?’ which reveals what’s on students’ minds throughout the year with a series of questions.
We will be launching our brand new layout and design for The Spark this year thanks to the hard work of our design team led by our Design Editor Frannie Liddle. With this design, we encourage all artists to help us illustrate and bring The Spark to life!
The committee at The Spark can’t wait to hear from you. All the best to you in your new year!
