Now I’m sure that this choice comes as no surprise to anyone, but Elf (2003) is without a doubt one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time. Yes, of all time. No, you can’t change my mind. And NO, Die Hard is not a Christmas movie.
Growing up, it was sort of an unspoken tradition to watch Elf every year when Christmas came creeping around the corner. To this day, I don’t think a year has gone by that I can’t remember watching Will Ferrell pelt snowballs with Roger Federer-like power and accuracy at unsuspecting children, and I encourage all of you to do the same! (Watch the movie, I mean…).
With my own snowball in hand, I will laugh with the same childlike-vigour that I did when I was a seven-year-old watching my box TV after trying (and failing) to carry all my presents up the stairs in one trip. Like the titular elf in this movie, I hope to never grow out of this brilliant movie. Without fail, it always gets me into the Christmas spirit.
