RUSU Society Awards Nominations 2014

RUSU Society Awards celebrates the achievements for the outstanding work students undertake whilst being part of Reading University Societies. Nominated by fellow students, the awards recognise individuals in categories such as, ‘Best Society Member’, ‘Best Committee Member’ and ‘Best President’.  The awards also celebrate achievements by societies as a whole, including ‘Fundraising Event of the Year’, ‘Performance of the Year’ and ‘Society of the Year’.

The Awards Ceremony takes place on Tuesday 11th March 2014, in 3Sixty, RUSU.» >

Asian Society host ‘Mission Bhangra’

On Thursday 6 February, the University of Reading’s Asian Society hosted ‘Mission Bhangra,’ a night filled with Bhangra music, Dhol players and plenty of dancing. 

This event took place in Café Mondial and was available for all students. There was a great atmosphere and the DJ, from Iconic DJ’s, played the latest music that ensured a great night for the attendees. 

The Asian Society committee were excited to announce that Ministry of Dhol, one of the biggest Dhol groups in the UK were performing at Mission Bhangra, which the students thoroughly enjoyed as Ministry of Dhol brought the beat to the dance floor with their traditional drums.» >

Debate Society host ‘No-Notes Open’ event

On Sunday 9 February, the University of Reading Debate Society hosted their first National debating competition ‘No-Notes open’. 

They had previously attended other competitions but this time decided to follow suit and host their own event, which took place in the Palmer building on campus.

Twenty-four teams competed in the event and included teams from Liverpool, Cambridge, UCL, Hull, Warwick, and many more. There were four teams from the University of Reading that competed.» >

Zoology Society visit Marwell

A visit to Marwell Wildlife Zoo is a chance for anyone keen on animals to get up and close with the wonders of the natural world, however this was not the only thing that encouraged Reading University’s Zoology Society to take a trip in January.

Marwell are also a zoo dedicated to the conservation of wildlife, and it was this focus on conservation, as well as the rare species on offer, that made the trip to Winchester a must for the Zoology Society.» >

Real Ale Society brews ale for campus

Ale brewed by University of Reading’s own Real Ale Society is set to be sold on campus while stock lasts.

The Real Ale Society met with local brewer Peter Cook, who is the Head Brewer at Sherfield Village Brewery, with the ambition of designing and brewing their own ale.

Jamie Duffield, President of the Real Ale Society, said of the opportunity to visit the brewery: “This all started over a pint down in the Alehouse when Pete Cook, who happens to be a friend of ours, said to me, ‘so when are you bringing the students down to brew?’ We thought, well why not?» >

Construction Society’s ‘Try a Trade day’

On Thursday 28 November, members of the Reading University Construction Society were invited to take part in ‘Try a Trade day’, hosted by Brookfield Multiplex, the principal contractor at Bridges Hall of Residence student accommodation project.

The day was designed to give the group a taste of the real world of construction work in return for 4 hours that would be given back through RUSU community projects. The event took place at the project site and consisted of second year, third year and master’s students.» >

Rainy BUCs day sees first cup action for Knights teams

A wet Wednesday afternoon set the scene for the most recent round of BUCs fixtures, as the Men’s Rugby Union 3s kept up their 100% record this season with a win against the LSE 2s.

Reading had beaten LSE 65-0 only two weeks before, but as the teans lined up it was clear this time around that the opposition was made-up of many new faces. The team knew they were in for a different experience, and a much harder game, and it proved to be so.» >
